  • Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has started a drive to remove defunct trident light poles across Salt Lake. Civic officials said the decision to remove trident light poles was taken last year. “Work order was recently issued for an agency to carry out the work,” said an official.

Such poles have already been removed on the stretch from PNB Island crossing to CA Island. The drive has now been initiated on the second avenue stretch. “There are many such ill-maintained poles that could cause accidents. Also, there is always a chance that these damaged poles can turn into live electricity carriers during showers. It is good that the BMC has decided to remove these,” said Soumyajit Roy, a local resident.

The holes, in which these poles were placed, would also be filled up simultaneously, officials said. Civic authorities said they were working to replace old sodium vapour lights with LED street lights.

“Presently, there are around 30,000 LED street lights across BMC area of Salt Lake and Rajarhat Gopalpur. Plans are on to procure and install another 1,000 LED lights, out of which 500 will be of 120 watt capacity and the remaining of 70 watt,” officials said.

The state govt has approved a funding of Rs 2.9 crore for installing LED lights across Salt Lake and for the first seven wards, covering Rajarhat Gopalpur. In New Town, NKDA has plans to restore all unserviceable street lights in Action Area III area by engaging an agency.
