• Cops foil suicide, saves 70-yr-old from river

  • Kolkata: A 70-year-old domestic help, Kalindi Mondal, who had tried to end her life by jumping into the Hooghly, was saved by police on Wednesday. Mondal, who stays alone and is physically unwell, had timed her jump with the high tide. However, her attempt was thwarted when a police speedboat arrived just in time to pull her from the water.

    A video released by the police shows the elderly woman in tears, shaking her head and crying on the speedboat.

    The incident occurred around 11.05 am on Wednesday. The North Port police station received information that a woman was floating towards Babughat. Within two minutes, inspector Indranarayan Choudhury, along with two disaster management personnel, set out on a speedboat. At 11.15 am, the team spotted the woman being swept away by the current. They threw a life ring towards her. One disaster management team member jumped into the water to rescue her.
