  • Days after a massive landslide at Dipu Dara near Singtam in East Sikkim earlier this week, the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) on Friday said that no damage was caused to the dam on Teesta river.

In a statement issued by NHPC, it mentioned that “The area of Teesta Basin Region has been subject to periodic natural subsidence/landslides during the ongoing monsoon season.”

“Today’s incident of landslide at NHPC 510 MW Teesta-V Power Station (Sikkim) also occurred due to subsidence/landslide over Tail Race Tunnel (TRT) outlet structure and behind GIS Building. This has affected TRT Gate hoist structure and part of the GIS Building. The power station is currently not operational and undergoing restoration works after flash flood of October 2023,” the release read.

It said, “NHPC’s expert team from Corporate Office is visiting the power station to assess the situation, assessment of losses and plan for remedial works.”

The Teesta Stage 5 dam, hit by the landslide, was rendered non-operational last October following the glacial lake outburst flood that caused significant damage and flooding across the Teesta river basin. The dam that was overwhelmed by the flash floods was being reconstructed.
