Junior doctors are set to continue protesting on the streets of Kolkata, this time through the modes of street plays, songs, and recitations, while the dharna at RG Kar Medical College and rallies continue.
One such cultural program will be held Thursday at Shyambazar’s five-point crossing. The event, at 6 pm, will feature a mix of monologues, songs, and recitations, aiming to draw attention to the ongoing agitation.
As per protestors from RG Kar, there is a designated cultural team organising this event.
“This is our attempt to reach out to a wider audience beyond the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital premises,” said a leading protester. “We believe that cultural expressions can be a powerful tool to convey our message and garner public support.”
The performances will reportedly highlight the traumatic incident and the ongoing struggle for justice. The protesters said they would emphasise that their movement, now in its 21st day, is gaining momentum and receiving widespread support from various sections of society.
” We chose Shyambazar’s five-point crossing because we want to reach out to more people and not just limit things to RG Kar premises. The whole programme on the road will be of approximately 45 minutes,” Dr. Debdut Bhadra told The Indian Express.
Despite Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s appeal to end the ceasework, the junior doctors have remained steadfast in their demands. “We will continue our protest until the main perpetrators of the heinous crime are arrested,” said one of the agitating doctors.
The incident that sparked the protests occurred on August 9, when the body of a woman’s postgraduate trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The discovery triggered widespread outrage and calls for a thorough investigation.
