Amid protests against the RG Kar rape and murder case and demands for justice, the ruling party of West Bengal, Trinamool Congress, Thursday sharpened their attack on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) which is currently investigating the case.
State Education Minister Bratya Basu and Industry Minister Shashi Panja on Thursday held a press conference where they said that “within 24 hours” of the incident, Kolkata Police “arrested the main culprits”, but that the CBI “did not arrest anyone after that” or “brief” the police about the investigation.
“For the past 23 days, the CBI has been investigating the matter. But they are in complete silence. We saw when Kolkata police investigated the matter, they regularly briefed on the development of the investigation. They also arrested the main accused within 24 hours. The CBI has not arrested a single person in this case. Now, (they have) changed (d) the direction and arrest(ed) four persons in a corruption case. May we conclude that apart from what the Kolkata Police gave to the CBI, there is nothing more in this case?” said Basu.
He then added, “There are many things which are not clear. The process is delayed… we now want answers from the CBI.”
Panja alleged that the BJP is “politicising” the case. the whole thing. She said, “BJP and other parties… do not want justice, they are doing politics. BJP Mahila Morcha went to the State Women’s Commission office. Instead of that, they should go to the CBI office.”
She also spoke on the allegations of the parents of the victim of the RG Kar case, namely their claims of police bribery and forced cremation of the body. Panja showed another video where the victim’s parents are allegedly seen saying, “We did not say such things. We only want justice. Those who are coming to us are only saying that they should help us to get justice.”
After showing this video, she said, “We also want justice with them. We also want that no political party should pressurise them to give certain statements. We have seen such vulture politics earlier also. We know the BJP is behind this. This is injustice to the victim.”
Praising the bill recently passed in the West Bengal Assembly, Panja said, “This is the solution to fight against such social diseases.”
