  • Kolkata: After a hot and dry spell, the coming week is expected to begin on a wet note, with the Met office predicting light to moderate rain between Monday and Tuesday. A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is likely to trigger rain in Kolkata and other south Bengal districts. While Kolkata is likely to get moderate rain, the two Parganas are expected to have heavy spells. The maximum temperature in Kolkata on Friday was 34.2°C , 1.8°C above normal.

According to IMD, the low pressure will gradually move northwards and intensify into depression over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of Gangetic West Bengal, north Odisha and Bangladesh by Monday.

“Thereafter the system is likely to move west-north-westwards across Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha, Jharkhand and adjoining north Chhattisgarh over the next three to four days. Due to this system, rainfall activity is likely to increase over south Bengal including Kolkata from Monday onwards,” said a Met official.

So far the city’s seasonal rain count is within the normal range. Met officials expect normal rain in Sept as well. Multiple rain spells in Aug had kept the mercury below the normal mark on a number of days, but rain scarcity in the past few days has pushed the temperature slightly up the normal mark.
