The West Bengal Medical Council on Saturday issued a showcause notice to Dr Sandip Ghosh, former principal of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, over allegations of large-scale corruption and financial irregularities that arose after the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the hospital.

Also, the council suspended three doctors known to be close to Dr Ghosh and accused of threatening junior doctors.

“We have sent a showcause notice to Dr Sandip Ghosh. It is a prerequisite for taking any steps against any doctor, which may include the cancellation of registration. Three other doctors have been told to refrain from any activities of the WBMC until allegations against them are proved wrong. We have received complaints against them,” Sudipto Roy, president of the council, told The Indian Express.

Dr Ghosh, who is in CBI custody, has been given three days to respond to the showcause notice. His registration may be cancelled if he refuses to reply to the notice, a source in the medical council said.

The three suspended doctors are Avik De, a former resident medical officer of the radio diagnosis department at the Burdwan Medical College Hospital; Birupaksha Biswas, a former senior doctor in the pathology department of the Burdwan medical college; and Mustafizur Rahaman Mallick, a junior doctor at the Midnapore Medical College Hospital.

The three are accused of having threatened other doctors and junior doctors various times at medical college hospitals. A large number of junior doctors have accused them of intimidation, harassment and threats.

On Thursday the health department suspended Dr Avik De and Dr Birupaksha Biswas. There were protests at the Midnapore Medical College and Hospital against Dr Mustafizur Rahaman Mallick.
