  • Kolkata: A six-member NAAC team, which visited Jadavpur University from Wednesday to Friday for assessment and re-accreditation, reportedly raised concerns about its low fee structure but lauded the institute for its ability to impart quality education, along with various facilities, like accessible library and university press, despite financial shortage.

“The NAAC team praised our efforts to provide quality and inclusive education despite a funds crunch. At the same time, the officials raised concerns about the sustainability of low fees,” Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association (JUTA) general secretary Partha Pratim Ray.

The monthly tuition fees for arts, science and engineering faculties are Rs 75, Rs 150 and Rs 200 respectively. The hostel fee is Rs 25 a month. “While discussing academic and financial affairs of the university, the NAAC team said fees should be rationalized so that it becomes sustainable for the university in the long run,” said a professor, who was present at the NAAC exit meeting. “There can be provisions to exempt underprivileged students, who cannot afford a slightly enhanced fee.”

Sources said the team also noted that JU had been exploring ways of generating resources, such as connecting with alumni for funds and consultancy by professors.

Another professor said the NAAC team did point out that the university lacked in certain areas, such as laboratory space, toilet maintenance and building repairs and renovation. A few months ago, a section of JU students had held an agitation against unhygienic toilets that were not fit to use.
