• Kolkata rape-murder case: CBI gets 3-day custody of RG Kar ex-principal, inspector, claims ‘bigger conspiracy likely’

  • Day after the former principal of RG Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh and Tala police station officer-in-charge Abhijit Mondol (MONDAL) were arrested in connection with the rape and murder of a junior doctor, they were remanded in CBI custody until September 17 by a court in Sealdah on Sunday.

The CBI claimed in court that “there could be a bigger conspiracy” and that both Ghosh and Mondal had played some “vital roles” in this crime. The two were in touch with each other, and the former issued instructions to the policeman on how to proceed with the rape-murder case, the agency claimed.

Seeking three-day custody of Ghosh and Mondol, the CBI said they need to be interrogated “face-to-face”, and both have tried to “downplay the incident” as well as “shield” the heinous crime.

On September 2, Ghosh was arrested by the CBI in connection with the alleged financial irregularities at the institute during his tenure. He is currently in judicial custody. The CBI on Saturday alleged that Mondol and Ghosh were involved in disturbing the crime scene, tampering with evidence, violating official rules, criminal conspiracy, and misleading investigators.

On Sunday before the court, the CBI claimed that Mondal took an “unusually long time to arrive at the scene of crime”, although it was “only a five-minute drive”. The CBI also raised questions regarding filing of a “general diary by the police, stating that the victim was lying unconscious”, and pointed out a “14-hour delay in registering an FIR.”

According to the CBI, Mondol was “informed about the incident at 10.03 am but he reached the spot at 11 am.”

Mondol appeared before the CBI Saturday, and was arrested after being questioned for over seven hours. According to CBI sources, Mondol could not provide proper answers on his role after the body of the junior doctor was discovered. As an officer in charge of the Talal police station — RG Kar Hospital is in its jurisdiction — he was allegedly found to be tampering with the crime scene. He also allegedly delayed filing an FIR.

A day after the body of the junior doctor was found in a seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College on August 9, Sanjoy Roy, a civic volunteer attached with the Kolkata Police, was arrested.

Around 11 am Sunday, CBI officers, along with Mondol, left the CGO complex in a car amid sloganeering and protesters demanding the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal.

The late-night arrests on Saturday came as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was speaking with the protesting junior doctors outside her Kalighat residence, hours after she had visited the dharna site near Swasthya Bhavan, along with state DGP Rajeev Kumar. However, the talks collapsed again as the junior doctors — a delegation of 30 representatives — demanded live-streaming of the meeting, which was not agreed upon.

“We asked if we could get our videographers to shoot the meeting, but the government didn’t agree to that either. They said someone would record the minutes of the meeting. We asked for some time, but by the time we decided to agree and went back to tell them, they said time was up. Then she went away in her black car and one by one, all officials left the residence,” a junior doctor had claimed Saturday.

CM Banerjee had said, “If you won’t come in, why write an email (seeking a meeting). You are disrespecting me. I have been waiting for three days. Forget politics. Come, speak for the sake of the people. I will sign the minutes (of the meeting). The video will be released with court permission. Trust me, I won’t mislead you.”
