Durga Puja begins October 10 and will culminate on October 12.
While the rainfall is likely to be sporadic, there is a heightened chance of a downpour from October 5 to 9, particularly in south Bengal. “We anticipate light to moderate rain in most places of south Bengal districts from October 5 to 9,” said an official of the Met Department.
As per the weather office, some parts of south districts could see similar weather conditions, accompanied by gusty winds during the Pujas.
However, the Met office has not issued any warning of severe storms or advised fishermen to take precautions.
For north Bengal, the Met has issued a yellow alert (heavy rainfall) for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Kalimpong districts on Sunday. “The rest of the north districts are expected to experience light to moderate rain and thunderstorms until next Thursday,” the official said.
The Met office has attributed this to the prevailing weather conditions to a cyclone over southwest Madhya Pradesh and an axis extending from south Gujarat to north-west Bihar. “These factors are leading to the anticipated rainfall in the state,” the official said.
