The Kumartuli Sarbojanin Durgatsab, this year, one of the oldest Durga Pujas in North Kolkata, has opted for an innovative approach for its theme — honouring the often overlooked contribution of farmers and their wives.
Divided into three sections, the pandal theme highlights the interconnectedness of humans, nature, and the
exploitation of farmers.
Renowned artist Tushar Kanti Pradhan, known for his works on Durga Puja themes for over a decade, is the mastermind behind it. “We have come so far in many ways, but the condition of our farmers remain unchanged.
We have forgotten to show gratitude towards them. Through this pandal, we aim to express our appreciation and share their struggles,” Pradhan said.
It took Pradhan and his team of 15-16 artisans, two months to construct the pandal using natural materials like mud, clay, soil, bamboo, wood, and hand-painted art.
Describing the striking feature of the pandal, where Maa Durga has been depicted as an ordinary woman, Pradhan said, “Farmers are the ones who provide us with food. When they are tired, it is their wives who cook and feed them. These women work tirelessly, both at home as well as in the fields. For an agricultural country, they are the true embodiments of Durga. Hence, we have installed farmers’ wives as the Durga idol.”
The artist ensured that the Durga idol’s size, appearance, and overall design reflect the natural beauty and simplicity of a real woman.
