  • Kolkata: The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) is gearing up to accommodate new Durga idols in the art gallery at Rabindra Sarobar where such idols are preserved. At present, the authorities can accommodate about 10 new idols at the gallery and temporary enclosure after replacing four-five idols that have been kept there.

Currently, 13 Durga idols are preserved in the gallery.

“It is a challenge to preserve large idols and idols made of clay,” an official said.

Officials said seven idols kept at the temporary enclosure have already been melted. The structure on which the idols used to stand will be disposed of at Dhapa.

The authorities plan to start work on extending the gallery and had received approval for Rs 75 lakh funding to take up the work.

“Each year, some idols are removed to make space for a few new ones. The plan is to set up a similar structure to accommodate another 12-14 idols,” an official said.
