  • Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has carried out patchwork on some of the most damaged road stretches in Salt Lake by working during puja. However, many stretches, especially the inner lanes inside the blocks, are still in very poor condition and crying out for repairs.

Patchwork has been done on the stretch from JK Saha bridge to Karunamoyee, on the stretch from Purta Bhavan to Bidhannagar North police station, in front of CGO complex, at the entry point of Salt Lake-bound road at Beleghata-EM Bypass crossing and on some stretches near big ticket puja pandals. With no time left, work was done even during the puja days on Shasthi and Saptami to cover as many stretches as possible.

“Funds from the road repair proposals which were earlier submitted are getting approved and allocated in phases. All the 41 wards of BMC spreading over Salt Lake and Rajarhat Gopalpur will be covered,” said a BMC official.

Locals said that inside the blocks, there are many stretches where road repair work has not been done for several years. Loose stone chips could be seen lining the road stretches in many places, making it dangerous specially for bikers. “We have to move very carefully to avoid skidding off these roads,” said Kawshik Dutta, a resident of BD block who goes to office regularly on his bike.

“Road repair should be done in a sustainable way so that it should not wear out and need repairs again after a few months as it has been the case in many places. The authorities could also think of something permanent like having asphalt roads,” said a resident.
