  • A five-member delegation of the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front on Monday met Governor CV Ananda Bose and handed over to him a memorandum over their concerns in the wake of the RG Kar Hospital rape-and-murder case.

Earlier, members of the front held a march to Raj Bhavan to protest against the state government’s alleged indifference to their demands over the issue.

“We strongly reject the CBI’s claim that only one person was involved in the crime. We demand a swift and impartial investigation into this heinous act,” said Debasish Halder, a junior doctor.

Expressing disappointment with the CBI’s handling of the case, Halder added, “The court has repeatedly criticised the agency for its callousness. We urge the governor to intervene and draw the Central government’s attention so as to ensure justice is served in this case.”

The Governor has taken up the matter with the authorities concerned seeking immediate action, officials said. The junior doctors, who claimed of not getting an opportunity to talk to the Governor in detail, later said they had received assurance that their demands will be addressed.

Meanwhile, five of the junior doctors on a hunger strike were on Monday hospitalised, with some admitted to the NRS Medical College and Hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).

Tanaya Panja, one of the protesting junior doctors, was admitted to the hospital since she was taken ill since Monday morning. She, a senior resident at Calcutta Medical College, however, wanted to continue the hunger strike. Tanya’s blood pressure has dropped. On Monday night, a junior doctor of the Calcutta Medical College collapsed while going to toilet from the stage.

Doctors said her dropping blood glucose (CBG) was a matter of concern since it can result in kidney damage as well.

Boycott govt’s Puja carnival: Suvendu adhikari urges people

Leader of Opposition in Assesmbly Suvendu Adhikari on Monday urged the people of Bengal to boycott the ‘Durga Puja Carnival’ organised by the TMC government to show solidarity with the junior doctors’ agitation over the RG Kar case.

Adhikari also announced that a rally in the city, without any party flags, will be held on Tuesday ” to protest the attacks on women in the state. “As per Hindu rituals, there is no mention of any form of carnival during Durga Puja. We don’t know where this government discovered this idea,” he said.
