Netaji’s niece passes away at 95
Times of India | 17 October 2024The last of her generation, Roma Roy was third daughter of Sarat Bose and the sixth of eight children. She was also the first to be born at the 1 Woodburn Park address where Sarat Bose had moved from 38.2 Elgin Road.
Roma had witnessed Netaji’s rise in the 1930s and his election as president of the Indian National Congress in 1938.She had firmly stood by the family in its demand for declassification of Netaji files. Roma was also close to Netaji’s wife Emilie Schenkl. Her nephew Abhijit Ray said she was in Vienna when she had a childbirth and Emilie had taken care of her. “Gynecologist Sachis Ray, Roma aunty’s husband, was in Vienna when Ashis was born. Emilie was like a second mother to her. When Emilie aunty passed away in 1996, she was invited to speak at her funeral in Germany,” he recounted. tnn
