  • Kolkata: The idol of Danu, an Irish fertility goddess revered as a mother and warrior akin to Durga, which was displayed at the Behala Natun Dal pandal, is being relocated to the Irish Embassy in Chanakyapuri, Delhi. The embassy plans to install the idol as a permanent exhibit.

On Wednesday, the 15ft figure of Danu was plucked out of the pandal and transported to the Irish consulate in Majerhat. From there, it will be sent to Delhi by the end of the week.

The confluence between goddess Durga and Celtic goddess Danu was created by two Irish artists, Lisa Sweeney and Richard Babington, in collaboration with Bengali theme-maker Sanjib Saha. The project was initiated by the Embassy of Ireland in New Delhi to celebrate and commemorate the 75 years of India-Ireland diplomatic relations. The theme-makers of the club accepted the proposal, which followed multiple virtual discussions before the Irish artists arrived in Kolkata a month before the puja to begin the work.

“The Irish embassy had reached us through the officials of the consulate, urging that they wanted to collaborate with us to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the India-Ireland relationship. We had agreed to the partnership. They had also requested not to dismantle the idol of Danu and had offered to preserve and install it at their embassy in Delhi. Hence, we have made the necessary arrangements,” said Sandipan Saha, the convenor of the puja committee.
