  • Kolkata: Aniket Mahata, one of the prominent faces of the agitation by junior doctors, was discharged from the hospital on Thursday after a week-long treatment. Mahata, a final-year anaesthesia PGT, was admitted in the critical care ward of R G Kar Medical College last Thursday post-midnight after his condition deteriorated during the fast-unto-death agitation at the Esplanade mancha.

“Aniket’s condition is now stable but he is still physically weak. We have advised him that he cannot go fasting for now. Our medical board will review his condition after a week,” said Soma Mukhopadhyay, head of the anaesthesiology department at R G Kar Medical College.

Aniket had joined the fast-unto-death on Oct 6. One of the first of the junior doctors on hunger strike to get hospitalised, doctors said he already had an underlying condition of high blood pressure before the start of the fast. He was admitted with problems, including severe dehydration, acute muscle cramp, metabolic issues and high ketone body, putting him at risk for developing kidney and liver problems.

“I hope the CM intervenes to bring an end to this impasse. With the kind of charge sheet the CBI has submitted, it seems justice is still far away. Even as I am not present at dharna mancha, I am in spirit with my colleagues,” said Mahata.

Initially admitted in CCU under an extensive medical board, he was shifted to the step-down unit last Saturday.

“Even as he wants to visit dharna mancha he has been advised complete rest as he is still very weak,” said a colleague.
