  • Representative Image KOLKATA: Kolkata Police decided to approach all dealers who sell e-vehicles and request them to explain to the customers the exact requirements for charging the vehicle before handing over the machine to them. This should include a briefing on the exact nature of electrical connections required at the residence to carry out the charging and its safety aspects.

In light of the recent incident involving a 27-year-old delivery agent who suffered severe burn injuries due to improper charging of his e-scooter battery, the Kolkata Police is taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of e-vehicle users. The police plan to hold a meeting with e-vehicle dealers immediately after Bhai Phota this Sunday, with a primary focus on the electric scooter segment, which saw a surge in popularity across all sections of society.

The incident highlights the importance of proper charging practices and infrastructure for e-scooters, which rely on lithium-ion batteries. These batteries require specific care to avoid potential hazards such as fires and explosions. The police emphasise the need for greater awareness among e-scooter users to ensure their safety and prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

E-scooter dealers stress the importance of using the manufacturer-provided charger and avoiding overcharging or charging in unsuitable environments. They recommend choosing a well-ventilated area for charging to reduce heat generation and prevent potential risks associated with enclosed spaces with poor airflow. Additionally, they advise keeping the electric scooter and charger away from water to prevent electric damage and avoiding charging in wet areas or near water sources.

"Before each use, test the charger for any signs of harm, inclusive of frayed wires or loose connections. Do not use a damaged charger," they further stated.

The Kolkata Police's initiative to engage with e-vehicle dealers and promote safe charging practices is a commendable step towards ensuring the well-being of e-scooter users. By raising awareness and providing essential information, the police aim to create a safer environment for the growing number of e-vehicle users in the city.
