Narkeldanga promoter hacked in early morning attack at Sealdah

123456 Kolkata: A 26-year-old promoter from Narkeldanga, who was allegedly receiving extortion threats, was attacked in the wee hours of Tuesday with a sharp weapon that inflicted multiple cuts and left him battling with grievous injuries. The family of victim Imran, alias Abdul Hamid, also alleged that he was fired at and a bullet had lodged in his palm but police denied the shooting.
Police later said it could be a revenge attack with the prime accused, Jock, believing that it was Imran who had tipped off the police, leading to his arrest. No one has been arrested yet. "The main accused, whom we have identified as Jock, wanted revenge," claimed an officer.
The incident happened at Kaizer Street near the DRM Sealdah office around 3.15 am. Five months earlier, a local Congress functionary had been murdered there.
The victim, a resident of Narkeldanga North Road, was initially treated at NRSMCH and later referred to SSKM. His family shifted him to a private nursing home in the evening. Doctors said he was out of danger but the injuries to his hands and fingers may require amputation.
Police commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma said a probe was underway and a hunt was on to nab the accused. "An incident was reported in the morning. The injury report does not mention any bullet injury. We are looking into it… This is a one-off incident, and adequate legal action will follow," said Verma when asked about the incident.
Additional CP (II) Murlidhar Sharma said one of the accused had been identified. At least two to three others were present along with him.
According to police, Imran was called from his house by a friend around 3 am. After he stepped out, Jock accosted him and asked why Imran got him arrested. Even as Imran denied the charges, the accused tried to abduct him and began pushing him into a waiting car. When they failed to do so, they stabbed Imran and fled.
According to a relative, Abdul Nasir, Imran is a promoter who also has a cloth business.
"Jock, the main accused, was in jail for some time and was released recently. We have recovered the car used for committing the crime from Karaya near a mall. We are hoping to carry out the arrest soon," the source claimed.
Five months ago, Kaizer Street had witnessed another murder. A dispute, which had its genesis in an allegation of rampant hooking, led to the murder of a Congress organiser, Imamuddin, on May 1. The Narkeldanga police, along with the detective department, arrested five persons, all of them his neighbours.
