12 Kolkata: The Calcutta University Syndicate on Tuesday offered Masters students, whose fist-semester Bengali answer sheets were lost, the option to either accept the highest marks they secured in other papers as the score for the lost Bengali paper or sit for a retest.
Three examiners from three colleges under Calcutta University—two from the city and one from South 24 Parganas—confessed to have misplaced first-year postgraduation Bengali answer sheets, the total number adding up to 119. This delayed the publication of the MA first-semester results. "Our next exams are knocking on the door but we are still waiting for the first-semester results," said a student.
CU interim VC Santa Datta said, "Respective colleges are conducting inquiries against the examiners. We are concerned about the students, and the decision is taken for their benefit."
Fifty-four answer sheets were misplaced from the examiner from South 24-Parganas, who admitted they were burnt. An examiner from one of the two colleges in the city claimed that the answer sheets were evaluated and submitted to the supervisor after which they were misplaced. The other examiner from the other college in the city claimed to have lost one answer sheet. All three institutes are conducting inquiries against the examiners and CU has instructed the colleges to take disciplinary action against them.
"This happened due to the examiners' utter negligence. They can't be this casual while dealing with answer sheets, which concern the future of students," added Datta.
The principal of a college said, "The administrations of institutes don't usually have the details of the number of examiners chosen for evaluation. The system needs to be changed, and there should be a proper check so that the colleges are also aware of the selected examiners."
