1234 Kolkata: A 17-year-old boy was apprehended on Friday for the murder of Abhijit Banerjee, the 56-year-old man, who was found dead—with injuries on his head and his body covered in blood —inside his rooftop room in a Jorabagan house on Thursday. The teenager had fled to his home at Chapra in Nadia, from where he was rounded up.
During interrogation, the boy confessed to the crime and told police that his mother and Banerjee were in a relationship and that wanted to "take revenge" after he caught them in compromising positions. Police said they had recovered Banerjee's mobile as well as his gold chain and ring from the boy. Police said they were still investigating whether the motive was indeed the grudges the boy held against Banerjee or robbery. "We found intimate photos of Banerjee and the boy's mother in Banerjee's phone," said an officer, adding the boy claimed he took away the victim's phone to delete some of the photographs.
Banerjee, who used to be an insurance agent before switching to rearing and selling pigeons and renting out his car for a living, was found murdered in his rooftop room in a house on Sen Lane in Jorabagan, where he had been a long-term tenant. His sister and nephew lived on a lower floor in the same house. "A minor boy has been apprehended in the Jorabagan murder case. Investigations are on to ascertain the sequence of events. The victim was well acquainted with the minor," said additional CP (II) Murlidhar Sharma.
Investigators said technical leads from Banerjee's mobile and CCTV footage from the area helped them crack the case. The initial postmortem report on Friday revealed Banerjee received several cuts on his head and injuries on his hands. "The nature of injuries indicates the accused was a novice and one who bore grudges," said an officer.
Police learnt a young man, named Papai, had rented Banerjee's car. Papai had called Banerjee around 8 am on Thursday for the car keys, but the phone went unanswered. He then climbed up to the rooftop room to find it locked, said police. Papai approached Banerjee's sister, who sent a neighbour, Pramod Gupta, to help. Gupta managed to climb around the room and push open the door to find Banerjee lying face down, half his body on the bed and the rest on the floor, police said. The bed was soaked in blood, his head and chest bearing injuries, police added.
Banerjee's sister told police the gold chain and ring he wore were missing.
