• KMC, cops brace for 6,500 immersions on Sunday

  • 12 Kolkata: KMC on Saturday finetuned its preparedness for immersion of around 6,500 Kali idols at several ghats along the Hooghly and the neighbourhood ponds.

    According to a KMC official, ghats like Bajekadamtala (Babughat), Judges ghat, Nimtolla ghat and Doighat (Kidderpore) accommodated roughly 1,800 idols on Friday night. Additionally, neighbourhood ponds in Behala, Tollygunge, Jadavpur areas saw immersion of 800 idols.

    However, most of the big-budget pujas will immerse their idols on Sunday. "We have made elaborate arrangements at the ghats for Sunday as we anticipate over 4,000 idols will be brought her for immersion. We have kept cranes and trucks ready for transport of the idol structures from the ghats. Hundreds of porters will be deployed at four major ghats," said a KMC solid waste management department (SWM) official.

    Senior officials from various KMC departments like parks and square, SWM and civil engineering inspected the ghats along the Hooghly to oversee the preparedness. "We have formed special teams with personnel from parks department, solid waste management department and civil engineering department who are upgrading the infrastructure at the ghats along with minor repairs," said a KMC official.

    Furthermore, special arrangements are being made in and around neighbourhood ponds like Layelka, Ranidighi, Patuli and those in Behala that are expected to see over 2000 idol immersions on Sunday.

    Kolkata Police brass is deploying 8,000-odd personnel around the city ghats from Saturday — there were approximately 2,000 on Saturday.
