According to a statement, 328 people across various divisions were arrested for disorderly conduct while 265 people were arrested for burning banned crackers and another eight for gambling.
The police also seized 717.8 kg of banned firecrackers along with 79.4 litres of liquor, the officer said, adding that over 800 people have been prosecuted for violating traffic rules from different parts of the city during the period.
Cracker bursting was reported in several Kolkata areas, including Sarat Bose Road, Lake, Dhakuria, along with Purba Behala, and Purba Jadavpur. Additional reports of illegal firecracker bursting surfaced from Shapoorji in New Town and Baguiati along VIP Road, the statement said.
The Kolkata Traffic Police prosecuted 296 bikers and 93 pillion riders for riding without helmets, 93 for rash driving, 90 for drunken driving and 196 others. “Rigourous checking and arrests will continue at least for two more days,” the officer said.
Till Wednesday, Kolkata Police arrested 68 people and seized nearly 4,000 kg of banned firecrackers, he said.
Last year, a total of 800 people were arrested for disorderly conduct and bursting firecrackers in Kolkata.
According to the police, most of those arrested have been booked for disobeying the Supreme Court ruling on bursting of non-green crackers or bursting crackers beyond permissible hours. The top court had ruled that only green crackers could be burst on Diwali during a two-hours.
