Couple and club members attacked by group of men for protesting ransacking of puja pandal

Violence broke out at two clubs in southern parts of Calcutta on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
A couple returning home to Haltu in Kasba on Saturday night were allegedly beaten up for protesting the ransacking of a Kali Puja pandal by a group of men.
“We were returning home around 1am when we saw a group ransacking the pandal at a club in our neighbourhood. My husband confronted the men and asked why they were damaging the pandal. On being challenged, they beat him up. When I intervened, they assaulted me, too," said Mou Saha.
Mou suffered an injury in an eye while husband Samiran was injured in both eyes. The couple lodged a complaint with Kasba police station.
Mou said the driver of Lipika Manna, the local Trinamool councillor, was leading the attack. Manna did not respond to calls or text messages from this newspaper.
In Netajinagar, a group ransacked the building of Vidyasagar Rudraksha Club on Sunday morning after the members raised their voices against a property developer who was allegedly in the habit of drinking in public and harassing women.
People in the neighbourhood complained that the promoter would drink in public places and tease women from the locality.
“We have been protesting such activities. So the promoter's men ransacked our club,” said a member.
Some club members were assaulted and had to be taken to hospital, another member said. They have complained with Netajinagar police station.
The police said they were trying to identify the men who attacked the club and beat up the members.
