  • 12 Kolkata: Nine puppies were stuffed in a sack and hurled into a pond by two local men since they were apparently ‘dirtying their house' at Howrah's Uluberia on Saturday morning. The incident sparked off angry protests from locals and triggered an intense agitation and chaos in the area. A large police force and RAF were deployed to manage the protests. No one was arrested till late on Saturday evening.

A dog gave birth to nine puppies in a corner of a house owned by Ganesh Mondal and Jagabandhu Mondal. The two allegedly stuffed the puppies along with some bricks and stones in a sack and threw them into a pond a little away from the house on Thursday night in the Bahirtafa area of Ward 30 of Uluberia Municipality.

Locals, noticing a strong stench, reported the matter to the police on Friday night. On Saturday morning, when the puppies floated up in the pond, the locals retrieved them and protested at Ganesh and Jagabandhu's house with the dead puppies. It is alleged that the agitated crowd also vandalised the house. Jagabandhu and Ganesh are absconding.

Ganesh's wife, Debashree Mondal, denied all allegations of killing the puppies. She stated that she was unaware of when the dog entered the house and gave birth. They themselves have limited space to live, crammed into two rooms. It was not possible to keep so many dogs. Despite asking the municipality to take them away, nothing was done. Therefore, they placed the puppies in a sack and left them by the roadside. They were not thrown into any pond. People were making false accusations and vandalised their property, she claimed.

Uluberia Municipality chairman Abhay Das said such a cruel act was done without informing the municipality, causing environmental pollution as well. A police officer stated that a specific case was filed and an investigation was on.
