  • 12 Kolkata: The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) on Monday got approval to receive Rs 19.5 crore funds to set up a bridge over the Suburban Head Cut Canal between GJ Khan Road and East Topsia, to improve connectivity at Tangra.

KMDA has also placed the plan before the state govt to widen the Garia Dhalai Bridge on EM Bypass, to reduce traffic congestion.

The Rs 19.5 crore funds approved for a second parallel moving bridge over the Suburban Head Cut Canal will be phased out over three financial years.

As for widening of the Garia Dhalai Bridge, the Kolkata traffic police made several requests to KMDA for expanding the peripheral area around the bridge as it is the most important link between the Bypass and the Southern Bypass.

"Presently, the Garia Dhalai Bridge is a two plus two lane. The plan is to make it a six-lane corridor," said a KMDA official.
