Peeved with the Purba Medinipur district authorities’ decision to demolish 140 hotels and resorts allegedly built illegally on the sea beach of Mandarmani, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday stalled the move, saying “no bulldozers will be allowed”. According to sources in Nabanna, the state secretariat,the chief minister was peeved with the demolition order.
It was learnt that before issuing the notice, the district administration did not consult or inform the state secretariat, or neither informed the Chief Secretary .
Mandarmani in Purba Medinipur district is a major coastal tourist destination in West Bengal.
Acting on an order of National Green Tribunal regarding violation of ‘Coastal Regulation Zone’ by the hotels and resorts, the Purba Medinipur district administration on November 11 sent notices to 140 hotels asking them to demolish illegal structures by November 20.
