  • Nine people were arrested after a government hospital in Kolkata’s Behala area was allegedly vandalized on Friday night over the death of a patient, police said on Saturday.

The incident occurred at Vidyasagar State General Hospital, and some relatives of the deceased are among those arrested, the police added.

According to sources, 28-year-old Mehbub Alam complained of abdominal pain while on his way back from Digha and was admitted to the hospital by his relatives around 8:30 pm on Friday. Doctors conducted several tests on him. They found that he had a heart ailment, and he died while an electrocardiogram (ECG) was in progress, the sources claimed.

The hospital authorities said that the patient’s family members alleged “negligence” and demanded all the medical records concerned. A large crowd gathered on the hospital premises as the family took the body in their car, the hospital authorities told the police.

According to the hospital authorities, a few hours after Alam’s death, around 12:30 am on Saturday, a group of around 150 people entered the hospital premises and vandalized property in the emergency observation ward. A nurse was also targeted and had to hide in a washroom to avoid the mob, the hospital authorities told the police in their complaint.

The police were informed, and a team reached the spot and brought the situation under control. In the wake of the RG Karrape and murder case, junior doctors demanded increased security in all medical colleges and hospitals in the state.
