“I congratulate Maa Mati Manush. Joy Bangla,” Trinamool supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee shared on her X handle. While the victory margin in Sitai and Haroa seats crossed the 1 lakh-mark, the Trinamool also snatched the Madarihat seat from the BJP which had tasted success there in the 2016 and 2021 Assembly polls.
Shortly after counting began for the six Assembly seats, TMC candidates began to lead, leaving other parties behind. As counting went on, the party consolidated its position, winning all six seats. The rape-murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College, and corruption issues – which the Opposition had banked on during the campaign – had little effect on the bypolls.
In Sitai, TMC candidate Sangita Roy won by 1,30,156 votes. In the 2021 polls, the party’s victory margin was a mere 10,112 votes.
In Madarihat, which was the only seat held by the BJP among the six, TMC candidate Jayprakash Toppo won by 30,309 votes. The BJP had won the seat in 2021 with a margin of 29,685 votes.
The TMC’s Sanat Dey won by a margin of 49,193 votes in Naihati, improving on the previous election’s margin of 18,855 votes. In Haroa, Trinamool candidate Rabiul Islam won by 1,31,388 votes, improving on his 2021 margin of 80,978 votes.
The party’s Falguni Singhababu won with a margin of 33,456 votes in Taldangra seat, while the winning margin in 2021 was 12,377. In Medinipur, TMC’s Sujoy Hazra won by 33,190 votes while the margin was 24,397 in 2021.
“Congratulations to all six @AITCofficial candidates for their decisive victories in the WB bye elections, defying the narratives created by the ZAMINDARS, the media and a section of the Kol HC to defame Bengal for their own vested interests. A special thanks to the people of Madarihat for giving us the opportunity to serve you for the first time. I bow before the people of West Bengal for democratically dismantling the Bangla Birodhis, their fake narrativs and reaffirming their trust in us,” TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee shared on his X handle.
Speaking to media persons, BJP state president Sukanta Majumder said, “These are by polls and naturally such results happen. But we are hopeful that in 2026 (assembly polls) we will win.” Meanwhile, BJP MP and former Madarihat MLA said, “We will have to find out the reason for our defeat. On one side it was TMC, police and administration and BJP on the other.”
Out of the six seats, Madarihat and Sitai are in north Bengal, while the other four are in the south. The bypolls were held after the MLAs in these constituencies contested in the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year and won.
