  • 12 Kolkata: The govt and govt-aided schools across the state are implementing a new evaluation system that incorporates classroom behaviour, like listening skills and self-discipline, into student assessments. The state school education department recently issued a notification outlining this change, which will be reflected in the holistic progress report card (HPRC) throughout the academic year. Teachers will monitor and record student progress, including classroom conduct, using both formative and summative assessments.

Full marks in formative evaluation for classes I to V in each subject is 20, and for classes VI to VIII, it is 30. Areas of interest like music, cooking, gardening, and dancing, as well as attitudes including self-discipline, open-mindedness, cooperation with classmates, responsibility for work done, attentiveness during lessons, and a friendly attitude, will be monitored. Exceptional abilities, such as adaptability in difficult situations and features of anxiety, will also be assessed during classroom teaching and learning and marked on the report card.

The HPRC extends beyond traditional exam results to assess abilities and proficiencies. It documents achievements in areas such as autonomous work, analytical thinking, and financial management.

School heads welcomed this initiative, but also expressed concern over the monitoring by teachers throughout the year, apart from summative evaluations.

Jadavpur Vidyapith headmaster Partha Pratim Baidya said: "All these things will be effective for monitoring students' progress throughout the year. So this will be easy for the teachers to address gaps to rectify as per requirement." Jodhpur Park Boys' School headmaster Amit Sen Majumdar said, "This could be considered a psychological assessment tool to address any kind of behavioural changes. However, offline training is required for each teacher to achieve the actual purpose of it."

Students will be provided dedicated sections within the HPRC to assess their own performance.
