12 Kolkata: Green peas continue to remain expensive due to a delayed local harvest. Currently sourced from Himachal Pradesh, the cost of green peas dropped from Rs 250 per kg to Rs 120 per kg — which is higher than that of other vegetables. The delayed local harvest and dependence on imports have kept prices inflated, despite an abundance of other winter vegetables.
Many factors contribute to high prices of green peas. Heavy monsoon often disrupts supply chains, leading to seasonal price spikes. Middlemen and aggregators, too, pocket a significant margin of the inflated prices, leaving farmers with limited benefits. The absence of govt policies, like a Minimum Support Price for horticultural crops, also exposes farmers to whims of large buyers.
Import restrictions imposed by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade to protect domestic production also play a role in price fluctuations, as reduced imports limit market availability. While consumers benefit from reduced prices on other vegetables, green peas remain a reminder of the complexities in India's agricultural supply chain.
