12 Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Friday expressed dismay at police failure to submit a report the court had sought on a blast that took place during Tamluk-Ghatal Central Cooperative Society elections on Dec 8 last year.
Justice Jay Sengupta expressed his displeasure to state standing counsel Amitesh Banerjee over non-compliance with the direction on Jan 2. The HC directed Banerjee to submit the report on Tuesday.
Justice Sengupta took strong exception to the state standing counsel saying: "What's the hurry over an incident in Dec 2024 in which nobody was hurt? Moreover, the hearing is not being held by the regular bench."
The matter was being heard by Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghosh. It came to the court of Justice Sengupta because Justice Ghosh was not in town.
Counsel for the petitioner, Billwadal Bhattacharya, said a huge number of explosives were recovered from the spot and a case was initiated suo motu. Bhattacharya pleaded that the matter was a fit case for NIA. He added that he feared further delay in the probe would lead to wiping out of evidence.
