• Customs man killed in Garden Reach, 1 injured

  • Kolkata: A 58-year-old customs officer riding a bike, Chittaranjan Singh, died and his colleague riding pillion, Premnath Routh (52), was injured when their two-wheeler brushed against a truck. The incident was reported around 3.50 pm on Central Garden Reach Road, near the crossing with Coal Berth Road in the south port area. Both were Salt Lake residents, police said.

    Police said the officers were on their way to the port when the rider tried to overtake the truck from the left. At the same time, the truck swerved and the collision threw the riders to the road. Both the officers were wearing helmets but Singh came under the truck's wheels, said police .

    The two were taken to SSKM Hospital, where Singh was declared brought dead. —Dwaipayan Ghosh
