  • The West Bengal Health Department has issued new guidelines for framing duty rosters of faculty in medical teaching institutions. The guidelines restrict private practice during duty hours and mandate the presence of faculty in key departments like the central laboratory and radiology department after regular working hours.

Key provisions of the guidelines, issued on January 3, include a mandatory 42-hour work week for all faculty, restrictions on night duty hours, and the inclusion of emergency duties for Assistant Professors. The guidelines also emphasise the importance of proper patient care protocols, unit-based patient management, and regular oversight by the Head of Department.

As per the guidelines, each faculty member must have rotational Sunday duties, and they cannot perform more than one 12-hour night shift per week.

“One faculty member from each unit must be available on campus at night on admission days for consultation with senior residents. Assistant Professors will be assigned emergency, on-call, and floor duties, similar to the responsibilities previously held by RMO-CTs. Morning and evening rounds in IPD and emergency wards are mandatory. All faculty members must attend OPDs on admission days,” the guidelines stated.

“These guidelines will improve patient care quality, enhance faculty engagement, and contribute to a more efficient and effective healthcare system within medical teaching institutions,” said a senior health official.

Leave restrictions have been implemented, limiting simultaneous leave for more than two faculty members within a single unit. Furthermore, the Department of Community Medicine will establish a general OPD operating six days a week to enhance accessibility to healthcare services. As per officials, failure to adhere to these documentation protocols will be considered medical negligence and may result in disciplinary action.
