While one of the students was given first aid and released, the two students, who sustained serious injuries on their foreheads and shoulders, were immediately taken to a hospital for treatment.
The incident sparked outrage among parents who accused the school authorities of negligence.
Parents alleged that the private school’s building, despite being newly constructed, lacked proper maintenance. They pointed at the incident as an “evidence of a lack of safety measures”. Furthermore, the parents claimed that the school charged a fee for ambulance services but no ambulance was available at the time of the accident.
They also criticised the lack of parent-teacher interactions since the Covid-19 pandemic.
The school authorities, however, attributed the incident to “students’ misconduct”. They claimed that a few students attempted to forcibly open a window causing the glass to break and fall.
School principal Arijit Mitra acknowledged the incident and stated that the families of the students who were gravely injured had expressed a desire to seek treatment at a different hospital.
The ambulance driver was unavailable due to illness, he said, however adding that such a situation would not occur again.
Tollygunge police have reached the scene and are investigating the incident.
