12 Kolkata: IIT-Kharagpur students proposed to the authorities to increase interaction among students in the Halls of Residence so that bonds can be strengthened beyond the scope of academics. The students felt there is a need to introduce more extracurricular and co-curricular activities at the institute and hall level so that the gap between seniors and juniors can be bridged.
The IIT-Kharagpur authorities held meetings with the students' senate members after the death of a third-year electrical engineering student, Shaon Malik, in his hostel room on Sunday, and heard the concerns and issues raised by the students regarding their well-being.Saif Ali Khan Health UpdateDoctors give health update: 'Saif needs rest; spine injury may get infected'Police confirms detained man has no connection to Saif's attackIt was bold of Saif to walk in with Taimur: DoctorsInterim director Amit Patra on Wednesday said, "We had a fruitful discussion with the students and received their proposal. We will put into action some of their proposals. We will also meet the students regularly."
"It was noticed that over the years, the interaction between students, as well as seniors and juniors, dropped. Therefore, students felt there is a need to increase interactions among students by organising more co-curricular and extracurricular activities at the institute and hall level," said a student.
Sources said the students also shared a plan of action with the authorities where office bearers of the Technology Students' Gymkhana and hall council members will regularly interact with the students, organise fun activities, and introduce them to the rich culture of the institute and the halls of residence. "The students proposed that all events will be organised under CCTV surveillance and with adequate security personnel to ensure that anti-ragging guidelines are not flouted," said a source.
"Involvement in events and programmes will not only bridge the gap between seniors and juniors but will also help them communicate their concerns like academic load, placement, and internship challenges," feels another student.
Sources said another major concern that the students highlighted was the lack of awareness of mental health issues and the need to ramp up the infrastructure of the counselling centre by appointing more mental health experts so that it is faster to get access and appointments during a crisis.
