  • 123 Kolkata: Some parts of the city woke up to a morning drizzle on Saturday even as it remained cloudy and humid for the rest of the day. The Met office, however, ruled out chances of further showers. It will continue to be warm until Feb 4, when a slight drop in the temperature is expected.

An anti-cyclone or a high-pressure zone over the Bay of Bengal has triggered the unusual mercury rise, said the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).Budget 2025 UpdatesNew vs old income tax regime after Budget 2025: Post income tax slab changes, which tax regime is better for salaried middle class taxpayers?Latest income tax slabs FY 2025-26Income Tax Slabs Budget 2025 Live Updates: No income tax up to Rs 12 lakh incomeBut the system is set to dissipate ovet the next two days, RMC weather scientist, Sourish Bandopadhyay, said.

It has cut out the northwesterly, leading the chill to disappear prematurely. The northwesterly will flow in after the system starts to dissipate over the next two days and the minimum temperature could drop to 18°C over the next three days from Feb 4," Bandopadhyay explained.

According to the Met office, the maximum temperature could rise to 28°C on Sunday from 27.4°C recorded on Saturday.

Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 22.6°C on Saturday, which was seven degrees above normal. A layer of haze had also blanketed the city around afternoon. There could be a marginal drop in the minimum temperature on Sunday.

But the temperature roller-coaster ride will continue for at least the next eight to ten days as the mercury will rise again after the temporary drop, Bandopadhyay said.

This Jan was the warmest in Kolkata in the last 15 years. The minimum temperature never dropped below 12°C, which has happened just once in the last decade and a half.

While the lowest temperatures recorded last month were among the highest in 15 years for the month, the cold spells didn't last more than two to three days.

"Even during such spells, the mercury didn't drop appreciably or stay low for a significant period of time. This happened due to multiple factors, including frequent western disturbances that triggered clouds and led to moisture infusion, pushing the mercury up. Kolkata was impacted by seven western disturbances this season," added Bandopadhyay.
