  • 12 Kolkata: "Where is Didi?" wailed an eight-year-old girl when she returned to her Gouranganagar in New Town from her ancestral home in Swaroop Nagar after attending last rites of her elder sister, a suspected rape and murder victim. This has been the child's constant question since last Thursday, when she failed to trace her 13-year-old elder sister after the latter reportedly walked out of the house.Delhi Election Results 2025Saffron surge in Delhi as BJP ends AAP's reign in landslide victoryDelhi results: Complete list of winners from AAP, BJP and CongressTop 10 winners and losers in Delhi elections

It was a traumatic 72 hours for her parents — a 47-year-old Inland Master in the merchant navy and her 44-year-old wife — as well. "On Thursday evening, my wife asked her to complete her studies and finish reading three subjects as she needed to attend tuition the next day. My wife then left my elder daughter on the ground floor and took the younger one to the first floor. Around 8.30 pm, when my wife came downstairs, my daughter was missing," said the father.

That was the last time the family or neighbours saw the girl. "We searched for her at several places from Jagaragachi to Baguiati. I have my elder brother residing at Baguiati and we thought she might have gone there. My daughter was not aware of the area. I believe she tried to locate the road to Baguiati as seen on CCTV footage. She was speaking to a few people seeking directions. Some miscreants must have taken advantage of her innocence. The police promised us that they will identify her killers in 72 hours," said the father.

"My daughter never left home like this. When she went missing, I searched for her frantically. When my husband called at 11.20 pm, he was confident that we would trace her. But unfortunately he couldn't," she broke down.

Neighbours said they wanted the accused to be hanged at the earliest. "Gouranganagar has seen settlements for the past three decades. We have never seen such an incident here. Justice must be delivered quickly. I just cannot forget her face," said an 84-year-old neighbour.
