Kolkata: Birders from Bengal will join over a thousand others from across the country at the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC).
One of the largest birding events globally, GBBC will kick off on Feb 14 and continue till Feb 17 across 37 states and union territories.
The birders will cover the entire south Bengal, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Malda and South and North Dinajpur in north Bengal. In central Bengal, focus will be on Murshidabad, said Santanu Manna, a Bengal coordinator of the event.
"Under this exercise that was started in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and National Audubon Society, birders count birds and upload the data on e-bird — an online database of bird observations," said Kanad Baidya of Birdwatchers' Society. Of the 1,029 species recorded in India last year, Bengal had topped the list with 529. Darjeeling topped the Bengal list with 305 species. In 2023, the state had recorded 492 species. In terms of checklist, Bengal ranked sixth with 2,752 entries last year . In terms of species observed, India (1,029) stood third last year.
