12 Kolkata: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday placed its budget proposal for the 2025-26 financial year, showing increased fund allocation for road maintenance, street lights, solid waste management and augmentation of filtered water supply.
The authorities proposed a total income of Rs 451.7 crore, showing a surplus budget of Rs 54.3 lakh. BMC mayor Krishna Chakraborty, in her budget speech, mentioned that the budget had been prepared with the aim of making the civic body more self-reliant, creating a strong civic infrastructure, and making the municipal service delivery system more transparent and citizen-centric.
Among the civic areas, the repair and maintenance of roads across Salt Lake has been one of the major concerns for the civic body, with several stretches lying in poor condition for a long time. The civic authorities proposed to allocate Rs 76 crore for the development and maintenance of roads and pavements across the BMC areas of Salt Lake and Rajarhat-Gopalpur the next financial year, starting April 1. The total budget allocation for road repair and maintenance in the BMC area last year was Rs 60 crore.
Augmenting the filtered water supply system was among the other fields in focus of the civic body. The authorities introduced 12 new water tankers and are renovating and modernising overhead tanks, providing house-to-house water supply of purified fresh drinking water through pipelines. The civic body proposed an allocation of Rs 83 crore for the augmentation of drinking water in the BMC area.
Inadequate street lights is another area of concern for the civic authorities, which has proposed an allocation of Rs 18.5 crore for better illumination of roads, which in turn, will ensure safety on the streets of the township.
For solid waste management, the civic authorities are working on procuring more dumpers for garbage removal and planning to modernise the stockyards. The civic body proposed an allocation of Rs 42.4 crore for garbage removal and allied services.
