AI, data science set for HS debut, 1st batch to take exam this year

Kolkata: Two cutting-edge subjects, artificial intelligence and data science, will make a quiet debut in Higher Secondary this year, with the first batch of students — 30 for AI and 9 for data science — taking the examination this year.
The HS council had introduced the two subjects in 2023. The initial response was positive, with 120 schools across Bengal opting for either of these subjects. However, many students who initially chose AI or data science switched to computer science later.
"This is the first batch, so the number is quite low this time. There was significant demand when we introduced these subjects two years ago but there was uncertainty among students over the syllabus and course material. Also, at the time, subject books were not adequate. We expect the number to increase next year," said West Bengal Council for Higher Secondary Education (WBCHSE) president Chiranjib Bhattacharjee.
From the 2025-26 academic session, the council has merged the two subjects and named it artificial intelligence and data science (AIDS). Bhattacharjee expects an even better response now that the subject will be more compact and comprehensive. Besides, course material and adequate number of books were now available in the market, he said.
Several school heads said many of their students who were initially eager to study AI and data science had finally picked computer science. A headmaster said when they introduced both subjects in 2023, five had opted to study AI and seven data science but all shifted to other subjects.
Another headmaster said, "We spoke to students who chose computer but refused to study data science along with it. Many were apprehensive that if they failed to perform well their results would be affected. Proper awareness is very important." WBCHSE secretary Priyadarshini Mullick said, "AI and data science were merged since there are many commonalities. Now, the course curriculum is more compact and time-appropriate. We are focusing on training programmes for teachers."
