  • 123 Kolkata: With 30,000-odd students in Kolkata set to appear for their HS examination on Monday, Kolkata Police has issued a stern warning against any obstruction or blockade that could delay their commute or disrupt law and order. The police stated that strict action will be taken against violators who will try to impose a strike.

"Any obstruction or blockade on Monday that can delay students en route to the HS examination or create a law-and-order problem will not be tolerated, and adequate action will be taken," said Manoj Kumar Varma, Kolkata Police commissioner at Lalbazar on Sunday.

Varma mentioned that although they haven't received any official communication from any political party, the police have come across multiple posts on social media about different organisations calling for strikes and blockades across different parts of the city and state in protest against the Jadavpur University incident on Saturday.

"There have been no formal announcements but social media is flooded with multiple organisations citing different disruptive programmes. We just want to warn them that Monday is a very important day for young students, and any attempt at disruption or obstruction will be dealt with strongly," he said.

Varma said that keeping in mind the safety and convenience of the HS examinees, a large number of police will be deployed on the roads to ensure no one faces any issues. A special helpline number — 9432610039 — has also been set up for students.

"If needed, students or guardians can call the helpline number or can also dial 100, and the local police station will take swift action. Keeping in mind that multiple HS schools are located in Jadavpur and College Square areas, these areas will be in special focus with even more deployment," said Varma.

Additional DGP (law and order) Jawed Shamim said additional police presence will be arranged not just in Kolkata but throughout the state on Monday. "Legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to create disturbances on the first day of the exam. The state has taken this issue very seriously as it pertains to the future of several students. Adequate transportation arrangements will also be made. We have had separate meetings with railways and transport dept on this," said Shamim.

The Higher Secondary exam, that starts on Monday, will end on March 18. Monday is the first language paper, which begins at 10 am and ends at 1.15 pm. "The administration and police have promised us all support, and we believe students will have no problem reaching the centres," said Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, the HS Council President.

Venue supervisors, who are responsible for the examination centres, are to arrive at the centres by 7.45 am. Observers will reach by 8.45 am and will be briefed on their duties in advance. Students can enter exam centres from 9 am. No unauthorised person will be allowed within 100 metres of the centres.
