Disclose course fees, stipend for interns: NMC to med colleges
The Statesman | 13 July 2025
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has directed medical colleges across the country to disclose the fee structure for each course and stipend paid to interns.
The NMC, the sole body monitoring medical education across states and Union Territories (UTs), has also made it mandatory for medical colleges and threatened that it would stop admissions in undergraduate MBBS, postgraduate (PG) MD/MS and other courses if any college is found not implementing its directives.
This drastic step, according to many senior medical teachers associated with different committees of the NMC, is significant to streamline a large number of private medical colleges allegedly fleecing money in crores of rupees from candidates during admissions particularly in MBBS course every year.
Usually, academic sessions in MBBS courses in colleges start during August-September every year.
The commission in its public issued on Saturday states: “In pursuance of ensuring transparency and protecting students from hidden or arbitrary fee demands, as well as addressing concerns regarding non-payments of stipends, the National Medical Commission has taken various measures in line with existing regulations and judicial mandates.”
“Regulation 4.3 of the PGMER, 2023 mandates that medical colleges must disclose the fee for each course while entering data in the seat matrix, failing which the seat shall not be counted. Therefore, collection of any undisclosed or unapproved fees shall be treated as unauthorised,” the NMC notice ads.
“In compliance with the above-mentioned regulations and court directions all medical colleges/institutions under the purview of the NMC are hereby directed to publish the complete course-wise fee structure and the stipend paid to interns/JR/SR etc on their official websites,” it states.
The commission has created a Google form link through which the colleges must submit the complete course-wise fee structure and details regarding the stipend.
Many medical colleges also share the fee structure and stipend details on intra MCC portal, however, the same is not comprehensive.
The commission has threatened to take stern actions like issuance of show-cause notice, imposition of financial penalties, withdrawal of course recognition and suspensions of admissions in medical courses if any college violates its directives.
The Supreme Court in judgment of 24 April has mandated that all private and deemed universities must disclose detailed information regarding tuition fees, hostel charges, caution deposits and all miscellaneous charges at the pre-counselling stage.
