  • KOLKATA: The family of a 51-year-old man from Burdwan - who was declared brain dead at Medica Superspecialty Hospital - donated his organs to five persons, including a dental surgeon, who has been battling liver cancer at IPGMER. The heart, liver, two kidneys and the lungs of Hiranmoy Ghoshal, who was a private tutor and a theatre artist, were retrieved on Friday.

While the lungs were flown to Chennai, three hospitals in Kolkata transplanted his other organs into four different patients till late at night.

Times viewWe can do much better. A little more awareness and a greater degree of sensitisation are what we need.

This was the 14th deceased organ donation in Bengal this year. This is for the first time in the state's deceased donation history that all vital organs could be retrieved and transplanted. Ghoshal's family also agreed to donate his cornea.

Ghoshal was admitted to Medica on December 28 with severe headache, drowsiness and seizures. The patient was put on ventilation immediately, but doctors found that his brain stem had stopped functioning. He was subsequently declared brain dead.

"We approached ROTTO once we got consent for organ donation from the patient's family. The heart recipient in our hospital is a 44-year-old man from Tripura. This is the first organ donation originating from our hospital this year and we will aim to spread more awareness, so that families come forward to donate organs," said Amit Ray, deputy medical director at Medica Superspecialty Hospital.

ROTTO allocated the heart to Medica, liver and one kidney to IPGMER (SSKM) and the other kidney to Charnock Hospital. His lungs were flown to MGM Healthcare in Chennai via NOTTO.
