  • KOLKATA: Over a hundred cops worked overtime to recover jewellery and weapons that had been stolen from a puja pandal off Maniktala Main Road on Saturday.

According to organizers of Yubak Brinda Club at Sitalatala Lane, the ornaments and weapons of the Durga idol were found stolen around 6am on Shashthi. With Bodhon scheduled a few hours later at the puja celebrating its 85th year, tension ran high in the area.

Acting promptly, police nabbed two of the accused within two hours of the incident being reported. "They are petty criminals with a past record," an officer said. The police, though, denied there was any missing gold or silver ornament, and claimed that only weapons of the idol made of brass had gone missing.

"The weapons of the Durga idol were intact till 4.48am on Saturday, when our volunteers last checked. It was around 6am that we noticed they were missing," said an organizer.
